SPY-T Trading SPY-T Trading

When should the overnight trade end?

Buy SPY at the close, then pick the moment you exit — the next open, 10:30, noon, the close, or stretch the hold to a week or a month and see what the extra days buy you. Real market data compounds your choice, and the shape of the answer is why the first hour of trading gets its own hour of attention here.

Settings — longer holds trade less often, so they pay the cost less often too

Methodology. Every strategy buys SPY at the official close and sells at the chosen time on the exit day. The price at each exit point is the opening print of that hour’s bar (Yahoo Finance hourly data); the close is the day’s final print. Exits before the close pay your cost setting once per round trip — holding to the close is continuous buy & hold and pays nothing. Longer holds are sequential, non-overlapping trades: enter at the close, exit N trading days later at your slider time, re-enter at that day’s close — so a 1-week hold trades ~50 times a year instead of ~250, and pays cost accordingly. Half days exit at the early close. The archive starts in August 2023 and grows every trading day. Raw prices, dividends not reinvested.

Read it honestly. These are averages across every day in the range — bull and bear stretches behave differently, and no average is a signal. What the data does show is structural: the overnight move and the first hour behave differently from the rest of the day, and every extra hour of exposure costs volatility and drawdown.
